Peeling can be done mechanized in two ways:
1. Using abrasive material to remove the skin 2. Using small blades to remove the skin

The abrasive peelers are more economical, but the peelers that use blades have a neater result.

Batch peelers types: SKB (uses abrasive material) and SMB (uses small blades)

We have two types of batch peelers: Type SKB, which uses abrasive material. Type SMB, which uses small blades. Both machines are identical with the exception of the inside of the drum and the bottom disc.

The movie shows a type SKB (abrasive) batch peeler functioning. As it is a batch peeler, the output is not continuous. Often 2 batch peelers of this type are used in parallel which are fed with a fully automated weighing hopper.

If the, to be peeled, product is well de-stoned and cleaned the abrasive material or blades will do their job for months on end.

Drum peelers type SMT, using blades, peel continuously.

The drum peeler type SMT uses blades. These blades are mounted onto stainless steel beams. The beams form the drum.

The big question:

How complicated is it to exchange the blades?

Not complicated at all. The drum is formed by beams where the blades are mounted. Each beam can be taken out loosening two bolts at each end and can be replaced immediately with a reserve beam. Each small blade is bolted with two small screws into place on the beam.

The drum peeler has an auger within the drum and opening or closing the out-let the capacity or the product-flow can be regulated very precisely. The result: more or less peeling, depending what the product demands.

If the product is well de-stoned and cleaned the blades will do their job for months on end.

The roller peelers type SKRT using rollers with abrasive material, peel continuously.

The SKRT is a roller peeler with abrasive material on the rollers. The rollers are mounted in such a way that they form an U-bed. The rollers at the left side of the center turn to the left and the rollers at the right side of the center turn to the right. In this way the product is always equally spread over the rollers.

The product is moved by an auger over the U-bed and by opening or closing the out-let, the capacity or the product-flow can be regulated very precisely. The result: more or less peeling, depending what the product demands.

Peeling onions is a technological challenge.

Peeling onions is complicated, because of the shape of the onions and their internal structure.

That is the reason an onion peeler requires a significant investment. Despite this investment these machines are very profitable. To check that, you only need to visit a grocery store and compare prices for a kilo of fresh onions and a kilo of peeled and chopped onions in plastic bags under vacuum.
