Let it never be said that agriculture involves nature taking care of the crops, while man takes a back seat.

Agriculture

The word agriculture comes from the Latin agri (field) and cultura (cultivation, growing). It is the combination of techniques and knowledge applied to cultivating the land. Agriculture forms part of the primary sector of the economy.

Agriculture is of huge strategic importance, since it provides a basis for self-sufficiency and wealth. Farmers therefore have a high level of social responsibility.

Crop rotation

The main way in which farmers keep their land healthy is by rotating their crops each year (crop rotation). A good rotation system does not just keep land healthy, but also enriches soil quality, reducing its deficiencies, increasing its mineral and organic content and even improving its structure.

Feel free to visit our crop rotation page, where you can use our crop rotation tool to see whether your next crop will thrive or struggle. You can also read our information about plant families, to help you choose which crops you ought to plant each year.

The best way to fight pests and diseases, or better still, AVOID them!

Erwinia

According to the FAO:

The spread of transboundary plant pests and diseases has increased dramatically in recent years. Globalisation, trade and climate change, as well as reduced resilience in production systems due to decades of agricultural intensification, have all played a part.

This is why we have dedicated an entire section to the nine most common pests and diseases and how to fight them, or better still, AVOID them!

Production costs in the Netherlands

On this page we outline how Dutch growers calculate their costs. You can also see the cost breakdown for growing potatoes, onions, carrots and cauliflowers. By studying this cost breakdown, you will see that all costs are covered, including storage for five months, handling and packing, and an estimated time per hectare for weeding by hand.

Calculate financial costs, analyse investments, Convert currency

As we said back on the first page: To be competitive, you need vision and investment. We can't improve your vision, seeing as we're not opticians: You either have it or you don't. But we certainly can help you evaluate your investment, and to this end we have created three simple evaluation tools or programmes. The first one works out the interest on a loan over a given period. The second one works out the cost per kilo of produce for any investment you are looking to make. The third one is a currency converter, making it easier for you to work out the costs in your own currency. Naturally, in order to get the most out of these tools you need to input objective data. In other words, be honest with yourself. Exaggerating your data might give you nice results, but they will also be unrealistic.

Exporting or importing onions or potatoes

We are inundated with requests to buy or sell onions, potatoes and other produce, but that is not what we do.

If you need to import onions, for instance, then get in touch with Mulder Onions B.V. They have produce available from all around the world, and all year round.

The global agriculture market is complicated and specialised, and is no place for short-term opportunists.

Related links for potato and onion farming

If you have made it this far, you might have noticed that each section has an option entitled "Links". There you will find references to websites with content linked to each corresponding section. Follow the links and make the most of the extensive information about agriculture from around the world.
Growers who think that they already know everything need not read this page.

There are a lot of important things to bear in mind. Growing crops is a cultural innovation that requires knowledge and hard work. Farmers must work hand in hand with nature, rather than trying to bend it to their will.
